The Ongoing Debate Between PCs and Consoles For Online Gaming

April 11th, 2008

So, you love to play games and you are looking for the best way to play them. There is a lot of internal debate when trying to decide between a personal computer or a game console. You first have to decide what type of games you want to play and which technology is better suited.

The PC is better for upgrades. You can buy a regular PC and super charge it in many ways with after market accessories. You can add a bigger screen, more storage, better sound, and different devices on which to play games. Some of these devices help play the games better or more realistically. For example, a driving game isn’t as fun when you have to push the arrow keys to steer the car when you can have an actual steering wheel that attaches to the PC.

A PC is great for playing online games, most computers are already hooked up to the internet to logging on is easy. And when using the computer for games, you can still do other things, for example, listen to downloaded music or chat with friends with instant messengers. Most games can be downloaded from the internet saving time from shopping in stores. There are even sample games you can play to see if you like them before buying.

The console is better for ease of use. The console usually comes with the necessary game pads for the types of games that can be played on them. You can hook it to any television and sit in any position that is comfortable. There are wireless game pads and joy sticks that allow even more freedom. Some consoles will allow you to connect with the internet the games you have online, but the games usually run as fast as your internet connection.

The down side of the PC is portability. The average PC is big and bulky; this does not allow you to take into other rooms or to someone else house. Often for internal upgrades, unless you are a computer nerd, must be done by professionals. This can get quite expensive and while your PC is being worked on you are out in the cold and have to wait to quench your game playing thirst. The average PC is at a computer desk and is not a very comfortable place to sit for long periods of game playing adventure.

The down side of the console is the limited games and technology changes. Technology in games change almost daily and the standard console cannot be updated. You just have to buy a new one. And as the consoles become more advanced so do the games and the new games won’t work on your old console.

Online Multiplayer Games - How It All Began

March 24th, 2008

Just a few years ago, multiplayer gaming was just a “+1″ for each game that supported such a gameplay mode; other than that, almost nobody cared about whether or not the title he wanted to buy supported a multiplayer mode.

Well, a few years have passed since then. As years pass, things tend to change; as things change, trends of the past become, as the word suggests: something that belongs to the past. Nowadays, it’s almost inconceivable that a new title doesn’t support some kind of multiplayer mode. Developers will throw in multiplayer elements in each and every way possible; after all, multiplayer gaming is the hottest gaming trend for the moment, why shouldn’t they? Let’s have a look at how this all began.

Although there where quite a few other multiplayer games available at the time, the real heat began when id software released the blockbuster title DOOM during the third quarter of 1993. Doom was a revolutionary first person shooter that shook the whole gaming world. Never before had the gaming society witnessed such a lifelike gaming environment and such an advanced multiplayer gameplay. DOOM was a real revolution; but this, was just the beginning! In the following years, id software released numerous sequels of the title; needless to say, all sequels had a great success.

As years passed, multiplayer gaming began to gain more and more popularity. In 1996, the same guys that did DOOM released a new smash title, Quake. Just a year after that, Quake II shook the whole gaming world for a second time; the time for hardware accelerated graphics processing had reached and Quake II was the only FPS multiplayer game to take advantage of this technology at the moment. Millions of gamers started to play Quake II online and countless multiplayer MODs (modifications of the original game rules) where released.

Finally, one of the last milestones in online gaming is Valve’s Half-Life. This is probably the most popular and successful game of the last decade; in fact, millions of fans are playing it’s extremely popular MODs (Counter-Strike, Call of Duty etc.) at any given moment, even now!

Following those great games, nowadays there are numerous blockbuster titles that boast an extreme multiplayer experience. New multiplayer titles are released every day but the most dominant ones for the moment are games such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life2, Lineage, Warcraft3, WoW, DOOM3, QuakeIV etc.

Why A PC Is Better Than A Game Console For Online Gaming

March 7th, 2008

Gaming consoles have taken over the gaming community. Companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony have changed the way we play video games. It used to be common to play computer games, sometimes against another person via the Internet.

Access to these games was only available through your computer, now there are several options available and more on their way. Once consumers began using game consoles online to play, companies feared the downfall of computer gaming. That was not the case at all. There are some disadvantages of gaming consoles for online gaming compared to personal computers.

Gaming Options

There are a few different brands of gaming consoles available right now. Microsoft has Xbox and most recently Xbox 360. Sony has PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 due to be released in November 2006. Nintendo has the Game Cube. Although these are all good consoles the PC has already been trying to merge the two (game consoles and pc gaming). Sony managed to merge them with its game Need for Speed, putting game console gamers against PC gamers in online games. This game became very successful. There are more pros than cons for gaming consoles when compared to PC gaming.

Disadvantages to Gaming Consoles

Some of the disadvantages of console gaming are:

All of the gaming components are sealed inside the unit. If there should be a problem you will have to replace most or all of unit, losing game data.

Once a console becomes outdated you cannot up grade without buying a new console.

A console is a one hit wonder; meaning you can only do one thing on it, play games. Unlike PC there is no other use for game consoles. Some do have the option of purchasing additional hardware, making DVD movie playback the only other option.

The games are not transferable. You can’t take an Xbox game and play it in a PlayStation etc.

Advantages to PC

There are some real advantages to owning a PC to play your games on. Here are a few:

The most popular advantage to PC gaming is the games! There is more variety and options for PC games than any other system.

Since the PC is more of a tool, games are easily downloaded and there are more and more made available for free.

Computers are made to handle the pixels displayed on the monitor keeping graphics sharp and without damage to the screen. Televisions weren’t made to handle the pixels as well and become damaged after a while.

Computers have many options available to connect to the internet, whereas consoles are limited.

Computers are versatile, allowing numerous upgrades and possible additions. Consoles are limited to the current system available.

Until a game console can handle the same things as a PC there is just no contest. PCs will still rule in the game world!
